A New York State safety inspection is required annually to ensure that your vehicle meets the state’s safety standards for operation. This inspection checks critical systems and components that affect the safety, performance, and roadworthiness of your car or truck. Here's what is typically checked:
Brakes: Pads, rotors, brake lines, and overall brake performance are inspected for wear or damage.
Steering and Suspension: Steering components, shocks, struts, ball joints, and tie rods are checked for looseness or wear.
Tires and Wheels: Tires must have sufficient tread depth and show no signs of bulging, cracking, or other damage.
Lights: Headlights, taillights, brake lights, turn signals, hazard lights, and license plate lights must all function properly.
Windshield and Wipers: The windshield is inspected for cracks or chips that impair visibility, and the wipers must operate correctly with good blades.
Horn: Must be operational and loud enough to be heard.
Mirrors: Rearview and side mirrors must be intact and properly mounted.
Seat Belts: All belts must be present, in good condition, and function properly.
Exhaust System: The system is checked for leaks, rust, or damage that could affect emissions or safety.
Chassis and Frame: The inspector checks for rust, corrosion, or structural damage underneath the vehicle.
If your vehicle passes, you’ll receive a new inspection sticker valid for one year. If it fails, the issues must be repaired before the vehicle can legally be driven.
Keeping up with regular maintenance and addressing small issues early can help ensure a smooth inspection and keep your vehicle safe and legal on New York roads.
